Community colleges constitute an important part of the American education system. Similar to China’s junior colleges, they provide the first two years of a college education. Compared to enrolling directly in a 4-year American colleges, community colleges offer the following three advantages:
- Low barriers to entry. They generally only require having graduated from high school and their requirements for the language level of Chinese students are relatively low.
- Credits earned at a community college are accepted by the overwhelming majority of 4-year colleges. After having completed two years of study, students can transfer into a 4-year college to continue pursuing their degree.
- Save on tuition fees. Community college tuition is usually less than half of that of four-year colleges.
