Hello, my name is Alex Hickman and I am currently an MBA candidate at Southwest University in Chongqing, China. I have been living in China for almost three years now, all three of which have been the most rewarding and opportunity-filled years of my life.
From July 14th to 15th, 2015, a delegation of six hailing from the prestigious Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, came to visit Pittsburgh, PA with the goal to establish inter-institutional ties with several PA colleges and universities as part of the Greater China Initiative’s FriendlyPA program. The delegation consisted of three professors and three administrators from the School of Public Finance and Taxation Affairs.
On January 23, 2015, the Governing Board of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) voted unanimously to invite Mansfield University of Pennsylvania to represent the Council in the state of Pennsylvania. Mansfield University President Francis Hendricks accepted the formal invitation on behalf of the university at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Colleges & Universities. 27 States and one Canadian province now comprise COPLAC’s 29 member institutions. Pittsburgh’s universities are a major draw for foreign students, with college students studying on F-1 visas bringing millions of dollars each year to the city’s economy.
According to a Brookings report released Friday, Pittsburgh ranks 15th out of 118 metros for its share of foreign students studying in the city.
Between 2008 and 2012, 13,326 students studied in Pittsburgh, spending more than $443 million in tuition and $182 million in living costs, according to the report. The top destinations to study are Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, La Roche College, Robert Morris University and University of Pittsburgh.
On July 22nd, I had a privilege to squander two hours of Ms. Heidi Zhang, a seasoned lawyer’s time, without paying her even a penny. Even more outrageous was that I got stuck in the traffic and was 15 minutes late for our appointment at the Panera Bread restaurant in a booming business district called Cranberry, just half an hour north of Downtown Pittsburgh. A lesson learned: Always planning some buffer time for meetings, especially those important ones.
However, that is not the only valuable thing I learned out of that interview appointment with a rough start. Heidi was a bundle of inspiration and wisdom. Much was learned that day about her professional journey in the U.S.; her philosophy of raising her daughter and balancing life and career; as well as her words of wisdom for peer Chinese parents and younger generation.
